Suzanne
Mooney is an Irish artist currently living in Japan. She graduated with
a Masters Degree in Fine Art, Virtual Realities, from the National
College of Art and Design, Ireland and is currently the recipient of a
Japanese government scholarship and a PhD student at Tama Art
University in Tokyo.
Mooney's research and Arts Practice examine how current representations
of landscape in visual arts reflect the lived-space of our contemporary
culture. In particular, taking into account issues of globalization,
urbanization and rapid developments in technology within our societies.
She is also exploring the development of an urban aesthetic within
urban landscape photography in Japan and its relationship to the
traditional landscape aesthetic. Using
imagery from constructed contemporary city spaces and borrowing motifs
and imagery from Romantic painting, her work questions established
perceptions of the world we live in.
Most recently, Mooney has published a photographic project in
SuperMassiveBlackHole magazine and will have a solo exhibition with the
Talbot Gallery, Dublin in 2012. In 2007, while on residency at The
National Studio in Seoul, she was selected for Propose 7 vol.2 at the
Kumho Museum of Art in Seoul. Between 2005 and 2008, she was
commissioned to produce Digital Scenography, by Dance Theatre of
Ireland, for three original productions; Watermark, Exodus and Parallel
Horizons, which toured Ireland and Korea.
She has received support from a number of funding bodies, including The
Arts Council of Ireland, Dublin City Council and Culture Ireland. She
has been awarded residencies in Iceland, Korea, Ireland and Spain and
regularly travels to acquire material for new works.
