Breathe Deeply
This
project was commissioned by The National Musem of Contemporary Art
Korea for 'Enjoy Changdong' public arts festival. This festival is
aimed at the local community in this Northern area of Seoul.
The most striking thing
to me during my first week in Seoul was the number of people wearing
masks, in the subway and on the streets. The resulting absense of
expression makes for a striking image and at times can seem quite
ominous. In response, for this Public Art Project, I produced a series
of printed masks, transferring digital imagery/photographs onto the
front of 300 masks and packaging them with a short description of the
project in Korean.
The images consisted of
waterfalls, mountains and rural spaces, places that give the impression
of space and fresh air, bringing a little of the feeling of this space
to the wearer and all that encounter them as they pass through the city.
300 printed masks were distributed to participants at the Festival and in the surrounding area.
