| Exodus Commissioned
by Dance Theatre of Ireland in 2006 (2nd comission), the videos
produced for this performance were developed over a period of
collaboration with the company directors Robert Connor and Loretta Yurick.
Taking the title of Exodus as a starting point, the digital scenography
was developed in conjunction with the choreography over a period of
approximately 3 months. The imagery that was selected for the final production
avoided a literal reading of the title and was instead focused on
bringing the subject to a more personal level, making the theme more
accessible and relatable, rather than exclusively about the Other.
However, there are additional layers of meaning in some of the videos that are not immediately apparent. For example, the candles were filmed during a candlelight vigil in remembrance of the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, on a man-made lake in the centre of Reykyavik. This parallel with the theme of Exodus, was a way to reference war, death and displacement, through metaphorical imagery. The original footage was then edited and animated to mimic and follow the movement of the performers on stage, in accordance with the choreography. www.dancetheatreireland.com |
