| Genius Loci
Genius Loci is an on-going
project exploring Landscape and Place in various locations around the
globe. To date, the locations for this collection of video vignettes
include Iceland, Korea, Japan, Spain and Ireland, and will continue to
evolve.
Within the area of fine art, the traditional subject of landscape needs to be re-examined as a result of the extensive developments in our experiences of Place. Not only must we consider developments within Urban and Rural spaces, but also the Virtual. Developments in technology have affected not only our concept of the space that we occupy, but also how we relate to other people. With increased globalization, human connectedness and disconnection from our immediate physical location have become necessary considerations when dealing with the theme of "Landscape" in contemporary art. In addition, our sense of belonging to a community is becoming less dependent on geographical location and as a result, our feeling of what is Local can incorporate aspects of shared culture from anywhere in the world. Even the far reaches of the world are familiar to us all through mediated experience. |
