Something Physical - Korea
This
body of work was the result of a 3 month residency at The National Art
Studio Changdong, Seoul and exhibited at the National Studio Gallery
Changdong and The Kumho Mesum of Art, Seoul.
In the gallery space, large video image is projected onto the wall. In
this video, a figure stands still making no attempt to communicate or
acknowledge anything or anyone in her own environment, or in the galley
space. This slow-paced video begins with a shot of the figure standing,
just filling the frame and after a straight cut, a wider view is
revealed. On the floor of the gallery, a number of sculptures
approximately one meter in height are spaced apart, lit by spotlights.
These objects are a hybrid between trees typically found in an urban
environment and telegraph poles. They are connected to each other by
threads/cables, forcing the viewer to navigate through them in the
space. The lack of communication in the video and the overloading of
communication in the sculpture create a tension between the two
elements of the installation.
When exhibited at The Kumho Musem of art, a second video, shot in Iceland's natural landscape, was included in the exhibition.
