| Under the shade of the mountain Under
the shade of the mountain is a multi-disciplinary project,
incorporating elements of sculpture, performance and photography.
This work shows journey of a lone figure, from the base of Mt. Fuji to central Tokyo, carrying with them the image of the mountain, by means of a mountain-shaped umbrella. Mountains have been used as protection for human settlements throughout history, but in the case of Tokyo, especially since Hokusai's iconic depictions, Fuji has come to hold a stronger meaning, both sacred and ominous. Of particular interest, in relation to this body of work, are the history of pilgrimage to Fuji's peak, and the transformative nature of this kind of act on the relationship between the individual and nature. The images shown here include sketches and maquettes for the final work. |
